You didn’t think layer dressing is only for the cold seasons, did you? Well if you did, let me tell you there is a new trend in town this summer. Layering. Don’t stare like that at your screen. Once you think better, you will realize layers work surprisingly well in the summer. And layers are the key to a perfect summer outfit from morning to evening regardless the heat or chill. How to start wearing this trend then? By long layers of course.
THE SUMMER OF LAYERS
As usual, (I guess all style trends come in four ways, just remember the suits I wrote about over here) there are four different ways to do layering this summer for a chic, cool and refreshed summer inspired style. The TONAL, TEXTURED (I did this one over here with a suede skirt and also in this post about pleats, silk, and tassels), REFINED (the white refreshing surprise detail of this outfit over here) and finally the LONG LAYERS that are the one I’m writing about this time.
I have this hitch for long layers for quite a while. Ever since my robe or better say long thin trench coat moment. In case you missed that one, be sure to check that trend over here.
Seems like my love for the long layers is not surprising at all, as the long lengths over each other do wonders for all of us who are not exactly tall as a runway model. However long layers don’t only elongate our silhouette but make us look slimmer, too. And what matters, even more, they elevate any simple, basic outfit and make it look chic and fashionable.
So how to master the trend of long layering? It’s quite simple actually. All you need to do is to grab a sheer shirtdress and other sheer clothes you have and put them on. And decide for one out of three looks. Keep reading to find out more.
#3 WAYS TO DO LONG LAYERING
There are 3 ways to do long layering this summer.
1# SHIRT DRESS + STRIPED WIDE-LEG PANTS
Starting with the one, I’m wearing today. Sheer shirt dress over a silk cami and wide-leg trousers. This look is just perfect to wear from morning to evening. The sheer shirt dress will not only elongate your silhouette, but the long sleeves on your shirt dress will keep you warm in the morning, too.
HOW TO PULL OFF THIS LOOK?
Still, there are two things you need to remember when it comes to this outfit. First, always wear it with the wide-leg pants. Even though our love for the skinny jeans is infinite, the relaxed trousers are worth of try. After all, they are the key to stylish look this summer. Plus, they make this outfit suitable for work, too. Yes, even if you work in finance or corporate sector. Just close one eye and call it a relaxed suit. Don’t know what I mean. Better check this blog post about relaxed suits over here before you go. Alternatively, you can wear the shirtdress with white straight-leg trousers as I do. Ps. find that look on my Instagram feed.
WEAR YOUT SHIRTDRESS LIKE A ROBE
Anyway, back to this look I’m wearing today. The second thing you need to remember is to unbutton your shirt dress and unveil the layers under the shirtdress. I advise you not to overlayer this time and wear a simple top under the shirt dress. I’m wearing a silk cami with lace this time. You know lingerie is so in that it’s out this season. Well, yes this silk cami actually comes from the lingerie section. Almost forgot to mention, if you are wearing a cami under the shirtdress to your work, make sure you don’t take off the shirtdress. Surely, I don’t need to remind you slip tops are a no-no for the office, or do I? Be sure to browse through the gallery below to find some tops you could wear to work even if you take away the shirt dress eventually. You will find them at the end of the gallery.
COLOUR CODE PATTERN MIX OR HOW TO LOOK TALLER?
Finally about what the colour the top you are wearing under the shirtdress should be. In this case, that is when worn together with the wide-leg pants, your top should compliment the colours of your shirtdress. Still, if you decide to go for a pattern, patterns can mix, but as long as they converge. To be clear, you are good to go, as long as your top and shirtdress are in the same colours.
HOW TO WEAR THIS OUTFIT FROM MORNING TO EVENING
Before I move on to the second way to wear long layers this summer, let me highlight the best part of this look. Apart from how tall and slim you will look in this outfit, you can wear it from morning to evening, too. Simply button up the shirt dress and, swap your top handle with the clutch (or carry a fashionable large clutch already from the morning), get rid of your wide-leg pants, and you are ready for a night out with your friends. Make sure you check my Instagram to see how I pull off the layers and wear the shirtdress in the evening.
More about the outift I’m wearing this time and where to get all the clothes I’m wearing is coming up in a new blog post soon.
2# SHIRT DRESS + MAXI SKIRT
The second way to wear layers this summer for a super fashionable look is to wear your shirtdress over a maxi skirt. Don’t let the long skirt full you. Obviously, you can wear it in the same way, but the best way to pulling off this style is in a) colour clashing and b) colour matching of the layers under the shirtdress. In short, pick a shirt and a skirt that clash with the color of the shirtdress, but match to each other. Be sure to check the gallery bellow to see what I mean. (Ps. You can shop products in the gallery, too. Simply click on the item and a new window with a store page will open for you.)
3# LONG LAYERS OVER LONG LAYERS
Finally, come long layers over long layers. Even though we are in the middle of the heat wave, you will want to remember this for the cold rainy summer days. Yes, you guess the essential part of this outfit is the thin long trench coat or robe. However, the star of this outfit is peaking from under the trench. The shirtdress. Remember we are talking about layering long lengths over each other.
The key to this look is to keep the hemline of your sheer shirtdress in line with the robe or thin trenchcoat to create a chic silhouette. This look is actually the upgraded version of the first two looks, as you can wear it either with a sheer maxi skirt or sheer maxi dress either with thin wide-leg trousers.
THE QUEEN OF SUMMER TRENDS
This summer will be long, sweet and hot. Luckily for us, there is a stylish way to stay cool in the heat. In short, the chicest summer trends are all about layering. Yes, layers are the ones that will keep you cool and chic this summer. And the best part, there are 4 different techniques of summer layering. From tonal, textured, refined to my favorite, to long layered, one better from another. Ps. What do you think about long layers?
