As many of you asked me what to wear for Sunday service, I decided to write a special blog post regarding this issue and share my tips on how to dress for Sunday mass. Also sharing 5 outfits you can wear to the church this season. And yes, there’s a special outfit fit for Sunday mass during Easter Holidays too. Just in case you show up in the church just for holidays.
TIME FOR CONFESSION
I must confess, you won’t see me in the church often. Especially not at the Sunday mass. And no, not even for the holidays. Truth to be told I don’t even remember the last time I attended a Sunday mass. But I do remember I was really cold. The thing is that I, quite soon after my first communion, realised that going to the church on Sunday at my home parish had nothing to do with religion itself but more or less about collecting money for priest’s new real estates, political manipulation, gossip, bragging and boasting. In short, anything but religion and finding the internal piece.
Well yes, these are pretty much the only reasons why people go to mass on Sunday in my parish. To gossip other people. And yes, the reason why people who we didn’t know actually needed glasses, wear glasses for Sunday mass in my church is so that they can see better what other people are wearing. Moreover, so that they can see who showed up at the church with a new haircut. And then comment other people’s outfits while our priest is preaching who to vote for in the coming elections. True story.
Anyway, let’s leave those hypocrites for some other blog post, à la fin, talking about them would mean I’m no better than they are and focus on what you really want to know. What to wear to Sunday mass to look fashionable yet church appropriate.
HOW TO DRESS FOR SUNDAY MASS
You might have heard about the Sunday’s best outfit. Or you might haven’t as people don’t actually know anymore there’s actually a church dress code for Sunday mass. And showing up in jeans, mini skirt, or (Fashion) God forbidden oversized sweater and leggings at the church is not appropriate. Not to say sinfully in many aspects, not only in fashion ones.
I guess we should discuss this topic a bit further, shouldn’t we? I mean you should know what not to wear to Sunday mass in case you don’t like any of my #5 Church Outfits. Yet, let’s have a look at my first outfit before heading to the rules.
SHOP AND WEAR MY MODEST STYLE
Surely not that modest as I’m slightly showing my knees. But is this a bad example of the church outfit? Not really. I mean I am wearing a hat. Albeit the hat is not that thing that makes this outfit more church appropriate. At least not in 2019. Whatsoever I’m addressing the hat issue a bit later. First, let’s have a closer look at what I’m wearing and where you can shop my style of course.
I get a commission for purchases or clicks made through links in this post. As usual, you can shop my look straight from the fashion cheat sheey. Simply click on the items you want to get, that is once and where you see the pink box, and a link will take you to the store where you can buy them.
Ps. Be sure to save, pin an print this fashion cheat sheet and keep it close to that pearl bracelet with the cross that’s not really a bracelet. You know what I think but I guess you don’t know what’s called either.
JUST A LITTLE ABOVE KNEES
I admit I made a church faux pas by wearing a cocktail dress with this trench coat. I should have grabbed the longer one but I was already in a hurry, and I grabbed the first trench coat I found in my dressing room. Surely this wouldn’t have happened to me if I was actually going to a Sunday Mass. Or maybe it would as I would have probably slept in anyways. What so ever the point is, that my trench coat should have been longer.
By the way, you have also seen me wearing this trench coat with so many other outfits last year. The last time over here, at the airport on my way home for the holidays. And yes, you should definitely check that post as well, especially if you still need to fly back home for the holidays.
Seems like hats and trousers are not the only things we need to discuss. High heels are dubious too, aren’t they? Whatsoever, you still want to know all about my transparent shoes, right? Or perhaps not as you already know these shoes quite well. I mean I have been wearing them on repeat ever since I got them. Remember how I wore them to the afternoon tea over here and with the denim jacket and tulle skirt for a date with my girl friends over here?
Again, if this is your first time on Brunette from Wall Street blog, these leather and plexi pumps are from Gianvito Rossi and you can shop them here. Ps. These stunning pumps come in other colours too. Yet, these and the one with the black point (shop here) are the most church appropriate.
Finally, the piece of my outfit you are must have spotted first. The hat. This cute little headpiece was made by a Slovenian hat designer Špela Strašek. The brand is called b.oh.o. You can check here stunning headwear on her Instagram.
WHAT NOT TO WEAR TO THE CHURCH
Now let’s have a look at the rules. By the way, this is roman catholic dress code I’m writing about. So what is the basic Catholic’s dress code for women?
#1 COVER YOUR SHOULDERS
Not that this would be any problem if you go to the Sunday mass only for the holidays as most of them fall on the coldest days anyways. But in case you go to the mass on Sunday morning in summer, remember to cover your shoulders. Meaning, no slip and tank tops. And God forbade off the shoulder tops. Well, unless you cover them with a large scarf. Still, better to opt for short sleeves in the first way.
#2 COVER YOUR KNEES
Well, I kind of broke that rule this time. But given I’m wearing a decent black cocktail dress, it’s not a big deal at all. However, I wanted to show you what to do if you don’t have any skirt or dress that would cover your knees.
#3 COVER BUSTLINE
I guess this is quite obvious, don’t you think?
#4 DON’T WEAR TROUSERS
Since wearing trousers used to be a sin for women (more about this sin later), a trouser policy is not of a surprise at all. No, you shouldn’t wear trousers to the Sunday mass. But truth to be told no one will judge you if you do wear pants for Sunday service. That is as long as you don’t wear shorts.
#5 DON’T WEAR LOGOS
Logomania might be in fashion. Yet not in the church.
#6 PLATFORM SHOES
Platforms you just bought might be your best shoes, yet they don’t fit into the Sunday Best dress code. Platforms and extremely high heels are not modest nor elegant enough to pass this dress code.
#7 OPEN TOE SHOES
You didn’t think you could leave this part uncovered, did you? After all, the Church dress code is not then different from the business formal dress code. Apart from the pants and hat, of course. Anyway about hat and trousers issue a bit later. Now let’s have a look at the second outfit I wore to the church.
WHERE TO SHOP AND HOW TO WEAR MY STYLE
Again, you can shop all the things straight from the fashion cheat sheet. Just click/touch the pink box that pops up as you scroll down. Or if this sounds too complicated, look for the items in the widget below.
Oh, and don’t forget to save, pin, print and share this fashion cheat sheet with your friend who just found the God. Or married into the Catholic family and want to please her mother-in-law by going to the church with her.
Unlike at my first attempt, I totally nailed this Sunday Best outfit. It’s modest, sophisticated and it covers my knees.
You already know this Weekend Maxmara virgin wool coat as you can keep seeing me wearing it on my Instagram. By the way, don’t forget to follow me on my Instagram, and share your thoughts on my everyday posts.
Back to the coat. This wool coat is just perfect for now. Regardless of the weather you will always feel warm enough. Thanks to the virgin wool. Ps. Be sure to check my transitional looks over here to see how I wear this coat on the cold spring days. Oh, and you can get a Maxmara coat over here.
Wondering what I’m wearing under the coat? It’s a simple, well not that simple, little black dress. Not that little either. Yes, the little black dress is a safe choice to wear to the church. Given it covers all the part’s it should. But it’s not the only dress you can wear to the church. So be sure to keep reading to find all of my favourite 5 outfits to wear to the Sunday Mass.
Starting with the hat. Again, this lovely hat comes from b.oh.o. Be sure to write to the designer if you want to find out more about this hat.
As it goes to the gloves, you can shop same blue leather gloves like the ones I’m wearing over here. And get a similar small black top handle bag over here. Or here if you are tight on money. Well if you are not tight already, mind that they will push a basket under your arms at some point during the Sunday mass. And yes, they will want money.
Still not an issue we would need to discuss here. There are so many other things we still need to have a look at. The hat, trousers, heels, bag and makeup.
IS MAKEUP SUNDAY BEST?
It sure is, as well as the hat and heels. But can you wear high heels to Sunday Mass? Wait, first comes first. Let’s have a look at the hats first.
SHOULD I COVER MY HEAD WHEN GOING TO THE CHURCH?
Depends on what church you are going to. But if you go to the roman catholic church, then the answer in 2018 is IF YOU WANT. In short, there is no written rule on hats anymore. There used to be a rule (there was a code in order from 1917 to 1983, saying women should wear hats or veil to the church) but now it’s gone. And not wearing a hat to the church is not a sin. Same goes for wearing one. In short, if someone asks you to remove your hat or cover your head you can simply dismiss his request. By the way, I’m talking about women only, men should never wear a hat to the church.
Whatsoever, if you do wear a hat, then you must choose the right one. Not any headwear is appropriate for the church though. I probably don’t even need to mention a baseball cap, a fedora, or a cowboy hat have nothing to do in the church, right? Even the classic beret is not the best choice. I mean you won’t see Megan Markle (I know the wrong church, but still) wearing a beret to the Sunday Mass. Well, thinking better you might, as she is known for breaking dress code. But you will most certainly not see Dutchess of Cambridge do that faux pas.
Another thing that matters when it comes to wearing a hat to the church is the material. Surely if you go to the church only for the holidays, this might not even be such a problem, as all the important holidays are in the winter time and you probably won’t go back to the Sunday service after Easter. Yet you should know, that after the Easter the appropriate hat would be made of lighter materials. In short, you can’t go wrong with organza and tulle.
THE TROUSER ISSUE
I already mentioned this issue at the beginning of the post. Still writing it again make sure you note this rule. The church doesn’t think women should wear pants. Since wearing trousers used to be a sin for women. Merely because with a cloth in between their legs they weren’t able to fulfill their matrimonial responsibilities at all the times. Whatsoever no one will judge you for wearing pants to the church in 2018. As long as you don’t wear jeans, leggings or shorts.
Ha in 2018 even fashion would approve of these rules. Apart from the part regarding the shorts which happen to be one of the most fashionable pieces for spring summer 2018. Ps. In case you missed my SS 2018 Fashion Report, click here and be sure to read it later.
Keep reading to find out what trousers to wear to Sunday mass to please the (Fashion) God. You know to follow the roman catholic dress code and fashion trends.
CAN I WEAR BLACK TIGHTS TO THE CHURCH?
Absolutely not. Remember, if it’s not good for the business it’s not good for the church either. Even though so covering, black stocking is far from the formal dressing.
ARE HEELS FINE FOR CHURCH?
Yes, you can wear high heels to the church. Just not over 10 cm.
Here are some church appropriate shoes.
WHAT BAG TO WEAR TO THE CHURCH
I bet our parish priest would say any bag as long as you can put your wallet in it. But the thing is, that your bag should be more modest and elegant. And certainly not so big that you could stack in enough money to buy a new car for the priest. Don’t look like that. This is clearly a local Slovenian thing.
IS IT APPROPRIATE TO WEAR MAKEUP TO THE SUNDAY MASS?
Yes! You can wear makeup to the church. Even when you are not going to the church for a wedding but for the Sunday mass. After all, makeup is Sunday best. Wait! Before you grab your glue and your longest fake lashes to your hands, a little note.
Even though you are allowed, moreover encouraged to wear makeup to the church to look Sunday best, your makeup should still be modest. Just follow the latest beauty trends, and you will do best. You know, barely to be there makeup, and natural look. Ps. Read more about how to do your makeup for the Sunday mass in my tips below the 5 outfits you can wear to the church.
5 OUTFITS YOU CAN WEAR TO SUNDAY MASS
And here they are, my 5 outfits you can wear to Sunday mass. The most fashionable yet appropriate outfits you can wear to the church this season. 5 outfits you could wear to the church this season. Also, outfits fit for Sunday mass during Easter Holidays too. You know, in case you show up in the church just for holidays.
Don’t forget you can shop all the items you see in the EDIT, simply by touching/clicking on the items once you see the pink box. The pink box should pop up as you slide through the EIDT. If you can’T see the pink boxes, then just look for the item in one of the galleries below.
TIPS ON HOW TO DRESS FOR CHURCH
In short, you should dress modestly, sophisticated, conservatively and respectfully. Actually, I could give you only one tip, and you would be fine. Yet, I’m giving you 7.
#1 WEAR BUSINESS FORMAL OUTFITS
Starting with the most important one. In case you are already tired of reading. Although I do hope you are not. Because I still have some great tips for you.
Nevertheless, this tip is, as said, the most important one. If you really don’t know how to dress up for the church, then simply grab your formal business clothes. Although not wearing Sunday Best you will look church appropriate.
#2 WEAR NEUTRALS AND BLACK
A church is not a place for bold colours and bold prints. While this year’s fashionable wallpaper floral print is acceptable, stripes and other prints are not the best choices. Especially not in the bold, bright colours. Luckily there is a wide palette of neutral colors in fashion for spring summer 2018. So, I’m sure picking the right colours won’t be a problem to you once you check my Color Report over here.
#3 DON’T EXAGERATE WITH YOUR MAKEUP
As it goes to the makeup, I only have one rule. Make yourself look pretty but natural. Use nude palette for the eyes, line your eyes with the eyeshadow instead of the eyeliner (use that thin flat brush to do this), put a little shimmer and a matte lipstick.
Ps. Don’t exaggerate with the perfume either.
#4 GO FOR MONOCHROME
#5 ACCESSORISE SMART
The church is not a place to wear many accessories. Remember, you should keep your outfit modest. However, this is the best place to wear the accessories you wouldn’t dare to wear on the street. Like stunning headpiece, gloves and cross pendants. Still, mind the number of the accessories.
As it goes to the bag, here are some of the most appropriate and fashionable bags to wear to the church for spring summer 2018. As said before, your bag shouldn’t be too big. Go for a shoulder bag with a beautiful chain strap or a small top handle bag.
#6 WEAR A COAT
Not only because there tends to be cold in the churches, but because this is the easiest way to dress up to the roman catholic dress code. Just make sure your coat is long enough to cover your knees. Or 8 inches below the knees if you want to go to the confession room.
#7 WHEN IN DOUBT GO FOR A TWEED
MORE FASHION LESS RELIGION
So this is it. I know it was long. But hey so is the Sunday mass. As far as I can remember. By the way, do you go to the church only for the holidays too? Ups I should erase the too part, as I don’t go to the Sunday mass at all. Still, you can trust me when it comes to what to wear to the Sunday mass. Although, you might want to discuss these 5 outfits with your parish priest first. What so ever, happy holidays! And don’t forget the rosary like my grand grand grand aunt did before entering the monastery.
