Sundays are just perfect for trying on new style combinations and wearing new clothes for the first time. Well, clothes that were hanging in your closet for ages, too. Or even better, someone else’s closets. Like this vintage pleated midi skirt that I stole from my mother’s closet and am wearing this time.
LOVE FOR PLEATS
This weekend my style was all about this beautiful, vintage pleated midi skirt I stole from my mother the other day. I couldn’t believe she had such a treasure hanging there in her closet for 35 years. Yes, you read it right. She bought this stunning pleated skirt when she was only 18 years old. Who would have thought an 18-year old can buy such a classic and beautiful piece, right?
I guess this pleated skirt was her teenager’s love. She fell in love with the pleats on the skirt, the first time she saw it in the window display of the most expensive boutique in the town on her way to school. She simply couldn’t move her eyes from it. In fact, she even missed her school that morning. And keep doing it for a week before she finally broke all her piggy banks, and borrowed her money from her father, and walked into the store to buy this pleated skirt. It cost her a fortune, luckily for me. Otherwise, she would probably throw it away ages ago, and I would have nothing to steal from her. And no plissé skirt to wear today.
HOW I STOLE THE VINTAGE PLEATED MIDI SKIRT
Honestly, I was looking for a pleated midi skirt for weeks and couldn’t find a perfect plissé accordéon anywhere. All the skirts I could find were either looking too cheap (you know what I mean, that accordion pleated, plissé accordéon, skirts made of shiny polyester that rustle every time you move) either the pleats were not accordion at all. You know, too apart from each other. In short, I couldn’t find #theone pleated skirt.
Then the other day, while I was looking for perfect plissé accordéon midi skirt online, my mother asked me to bring her a scarf from her closet. Not willing to fetch her that scarf, as I hate browsing through someone else’s closets, I entered her walking in closet anyway. Well organised as always, it didn’t take me too long to spot the scarf she sent me for. It was lying there in the middle of the closet room on my mother’s accessory chest of drawers by the cotton garment bag.
Curious what’s in this cotton garment bag, that I haven’t seen before, I decided to have a sneak peak and find out what’s hidden inside. I opened the bag and … and there it was. The perfect black midi plissé skirt. The one I was looking for so long. I grabbed the plissé skirt and tried it on. And yes, it fit me perfectly. Well, after I pinched the waisted with a safety pin.
However, more about what followed next and how mother reacted when she saw me in her (correction my) vintage pleated midi skirt another time. It’s time for me to finally share you how to style the midi plissé skirt to look chic and fashionable. Not that this is a hard thing to do this season, while the pleated skirt is the most fashionable skirt of the season.
MIDI PLEATED SKIRT – THE SKIRT OF THE SEASON
As written in my blog post about all the major fashion trends of 2017 (in case you missed this post, check it over here), a plissé skirt is the IT skirt of the season. And by the end of the year, we will swap all the ruffles for a delicate frill. There were be pleats everywhere. Yes, even on the ruffles and collars.
Surely, not any kind of pleated skirt will do for every girl. Fashionistas know, not every frill is a real deal. My favourite pleated midi skirt is certainly the one with plissé accordéon, which allows the skirt to expand its shape when moving. No matter the material. So you get that Marlyn Monroe effect even in a cotton pleated skirt.
Anyway, more about pleated skirts is coming up in the fashion memo over here.
HOW TO STYLE BLACK MIDI PLEATED SKIRT FOR A CHIC LOOK
I’m wearing my 35 years old vintage pleated midi skirt (stolen from my mother) with a white blazer and floral slip top from Stella McCarntey Lingerie (last year’s collection, but luckily still available over here).
Before I head on to the shoes, a little tip if you are like me, always thinking ahead and buying only the clothes you know you could wear more seasons in a row because they will still be fashionable. Go for pleats on pleats and wear a pleated top under your blazer. Browse the gallery bellow to find the pleated top you should wear your midi plissé skirt with.
Another thing, about the blazer. Make sure your blazer is in a contrasting color to the color of your pleated skirt. That is if you want to look chic and not girly. Ps. Follow me on Instagram to see how I wear my pink pleated skirt with a red blazer.
Now to the shoes!!! I’m so in love with these Tropicana tasseled beaded sandals from Aquazzura (shop on sale here). But you probably already now that. You did see me wearing these Aquazzura sandals with the white suit and black and white striped wide-leg pants and raffia basket bag over here, right? If not make sure you check it. That basket bag is all!
Writing about the bag, I’m wearing a small, yet big enough for all my essential things (PS. check what’s in my bag over here) white shoulder chain bag. You also saw me wearing this bag with my casual outfit; mom jeans, striped sweater and millennial pale pink sneakers over here.
MORE PLEATS PLEASE
You will see me wearing midi pleated skirts quite often now. As there are so many different styles, I still need to try on with this vintage pleated skirt. And also with a pink pleated midi skirt, that I ordered a few weeks ago, but still waiting. Hopefully, I get my frill skirt soon. Well, no worries if it comes late, as pleats aren’t going anywhere for quite some time. Anyway, be sure to follow me on the Instagram to see how I wear my new pink plissé skirt for the first time. I hope I inspired you to try this fashion trend. Just be sure you don’t steal a midi pleated skirt. Unless it’s your mother who you are stealing from.
