Wednesday is the day when everyone gets serious, trying to be wise, at least for a day, right? Well, I’m following the smart crowd and sharing some wise words with you today. About fashion of course. Yes, you guessed it I’m sharing all the 20sth fashion lessons I learned in last 12 months while being a fashion blogger.
I admit, before I became a legit fashion blogger, 12 months ago or so, I was one of those girls who was looking down on, well most of the fashion bloggers who were trying to pull off every single fashion trend no matter what. And guess what, 12 months later I’m here walking around in the slouchy boots and the most vibrant outfit Ljubljana has ever seen on me. Have I become a fashion victim? Peut-ȇtre. But you know what, better that than fashion becoming my victim. Oh and I still look down on some fellow fashion bloggers.
FASHION LESSONS I LEARNED IN THE LAST YEAR
As said, in the last 12 months, since I became a fashion blogger, I learned some things about fashion. But most of all about me. I would be lying if I said I have become a completely another person though. That happened a few years ago, as a matter of fact. After I left Montreal for good, I guess. Surely if not then, then it had to be when I moved to Paris. Anyway, I’m different fashionista now than I was years ago. If I could even call myself a fashionista back then.
I believe some sort of fashion transition happens to every fashion girl after becoming a full-time fashion blogger. Not wondering why. This job is all about taking risks. Professional risks, life risks (sitting above the torrential river, walking on the slippery surface for the sake of the good photo, is a thing) and most of all fashion risks.
Anyway, enough with this vague talks lets head on the 20sth fashion lessons I have learned since I became a fashion blogger. Wait, there are actually less than 20 something fashion lessons. But you know, we need some drama. Because, in case you haven’t noticed yet, fashion blogging is all about creating drama.
WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT THE FASHION TRENDS AND STYLE
#1 FOLLOWING FASHION TRENDS DOESN’T MAKE YOU A FASHION VICTIM
Even though I’m not sure this was the first thing I actually learned, I must start with this lesson. Why? Because it’s so true. And no one wants to admit it. Well, at least those who can’t pull off any fashion trend and stay true to their style. The secret about pulling off the fashion trends and not becoming a fashion victim is in making the fashion trends follow your style. You know what they say, fashion is temporary, style is eternal.
#2 STYLE IS NOT ONLY ONE AND ONLY
Forget what I just said, because it’s clearly a fake news. Style is not eternal. At least not entirely. Surely, my style always leans toward chic as I turn out chic and sophisticated in everything I put on. I mean, let’s be honest, I found a way how to look somehow elegant even in a white t-shirt and mom jeans (remember here?). But still, I don’t buy that everlasting factor when it comes to the style.
#3 WE CAN PULL OFF ANY FASHION TREND
And we can do it better than most of the fashion bloggers out here. Just prove me wrong! Ps. Be sure to pin, save, print and keep close my fashion cheat sheets. You know, the so-called EDIT, you can find in each of my blog posts.
#4 FEATHERS ARE NOT ONLY FOR THE OLD LADIES
#5 ANY COUTURE PIECE CAN LOOK CASUAL
This one goes to the feathers of course. Be sure to read this blog post over here to see exactly what I mean.
LIFE IN COLOURS – PARDON FASHION COLOURS
Wait, before I head on the colorful fashion lessons I have learned in the last 12 months, we need to talk about this outfit that I’m wearing here first.
THE SLOUCH AND THE COLOUR CLASHES
You saw me pulling off the color clashing fashion trend quite often in the last few months. After all, this fashion trend has been quite big amongst the fashion nation. Well, it still is. Although slightly less vibrant. Ps. more about the new color clashing trend coming soon on my Instagram.
However, knowing this is my last time I decided to go for all. Besides this fashion trend deserves a proper ending before it washes-out.
Anyway, not to stop here too long, as you can learn all about how to wear the slouchy boots in one of my previous blog posts (here). And also in the blog post about how to wear OTK boots (here), I’m just letting you know where to shop my look. And here to see how to wear a more subtle version of this look. I swapped the pink skirt for blue and put on a black coat instead of this off-white coat.
SHOP AND WEAR THIS OUTFIT
You have seen me wearing all of these clothes and boots several times before. So make sure you check how each of them works in other combinations too.
I’m wearing Ganni red oversized turtleneck sweater (shop here – Ps. this sweater is large and size XS should fit you even if your size is M. Also see how I wore it with jeans over here), my favourite wool coat (shop similar here), pink velvet midi skirt (shop on a budget here, for less than 40 EUR, or shop luxury here, see how I wore it in summer here). And finally, the slouchy boots that are actually just OTK boots pretending to be the most fashionable boots of the season. Shop my Stuart Weitzman Highland boots over here or get the real slouchy boots in brown here.
LESSONS ABOUT FASHION – AGAIN
SO BACK TO THE COLOURS THEN
#6 COLOUR CLASHINGS ARE FUN
Do I even need to say anything else? I think this outfit here speaks for itself. Although I must confess, I don’t think I will be wearing so many vibrant colors with the slouchy boots anytime soon. I did almost step over the edge with this outfit. There is only one thing missing, and this would be a failure. Well, actually two. But merely because there are three fashion trends in one outfit already. Adding the fourth one would be one too many. Ps. Can you guess which fashion trend I have in my mind?
#7 WHEN I DOUBT GO FOR BLACK
Anyway, even though colours are fun and show the actual fashion sense of not only a fashion blogger but any woman, the number one is still black. The power of the black is eternal and immense. Surely Anna Wintour would not agree with this, but hey Parisians agree and that matters the most. In short, black is what you should wear when you don’t feel yourself or when you need an extra boost to make things work out best for you. Not to say anything more, you simply can’t go wrong with black. Wait, don’t get me wrong. That is when black is truly black and not washed-out.
SILHOUETTES COME IN PLURAL
#8 THE OVERSIZED SILHOUETTE IS BETTER THAN THE SKINNY
Stop. I’m laying. Even though you have seen me wearing the oversized silhouettes so many times, I don’t actually like the oversized silhouette. Not saying it’s not comfortable or flattering. Just look how the oversized sweater and midi skirt suit Mrs. Beckham and me (especially here). Yet I just can’t wait for this trend to be over.
THE ESSENTIALS AND BASICS
Make sure you shout everyone up when they start talking about basics every woman should have in her closet and start with the with a shirt, little black dress, and mom jeans. Not saying the white shirt and blue mom jeans aren’t essentials, but the little black dress. Sorry Coco Chanel, but this one is overrated.
#9 THE POWER OF THE LBD IS FAKE WHEN IT’S NOT
Yes, I mean it. The little black dress as essential it is, it really isn’t. There is some other outfit far more essential and far more powerful at the moment. And no, I haven’t lost my mind nor this is a fake news. The black suit is far more powerful and important thing in your closet than a little black dress. If you don’t believe me, then be sure to check my previous blog posts about this IT piece of clothing over here .
#10 THE KING BLAZER
If a little black dress is a queen, then the blazer is the king of the fashion. As long as it’s oversized, boyfriend blazer of course.
#11 IF I CAN’T MAKE 12 KM WEARING THE SAME SHOES, THEN THESE SHOES ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH
Do you know I test every new shoes I get before keeping them? No? Well, you know now. The limit is at least 12 km. Usually through the streets of Paris. If I can’t make at least 12 km wearing the same shoes, then I don’t keep them. Easy as that. Only the best shoes can stay in my closet.
#12 YOU CAN WEAR YOUR OVER THE KNEE BOOTS ALL YEAR LONG
But you know this already. I showed you how to wear OTK boots so many times before. Remember? Be sure to write in the search box OTK boots to find all the ways I wear my brown over the knee boots all year long.
#13 THE BALLERINA FLATS ARE JUST NOT FOR ME
EVERYTHING IN FASHION IS RELATIVE
#14 EVEN FASHIONLESS PEOPLE CAN HAVE SOMETHING FASHIONABLE IN THEIR CLOSET
Take, for example, my mother. She is far from being a fashionable lady, but she does have few fashion gems in her closet. Well, she used to. That was before I walked into her wardrobe and … you know my Sunday steals. Check here and here to see what I stole from her back then.
#15 WHAT LOOKS AWFUL ON OTHER FASHION BLOGGERS MIGHT LOOK SPLENDID ON YOU
Remember the mules I wore so many times this summer? Yes, the one I have been wearing constantly. And I have been wearing them in fall as well. Well, I was having second thoughts when buying them. Thanks to one Slovenian blogger, who I somehow still follow (merly checking the competition I guess) even though everything, seriously everything looks awful on her. And no I don’t want to shadow her or anyone else, but it’s true. There were so many fashion trends she tried, only tried, to pull off before me, that I started to hate before even trying them by myself.
The same thing happened with the mules. I still have that ugly photo in my mind of that fashion blogger in her black Zara mules. Luckily this fashion trend was too big to pass, and I decided to give it a try regardless how ugly the mules looked on her.
And you know what, mules turned out to work just great on me. Not saying they became my favourite shoes of the year, but they did make the best shoe option for so many outfits that I wore in last few months. Remember the vinyl pants here? Mentioning the vinyl pants …
NEVER SAY NEVER … UNLESS YOU MEAN IT
#16 DON’T SAY NO TO THE HIGH-SHINE PANTS
The vinyl pants. My friends definitely didn’t see this coming. I can totally imagine some of my dear friends when they scrolled down their Instagram feed and saw me standing there by Ljubljanica in that high-shine pants. Who would have thought about seeing me in pants like that? Well, I did. But truth to be told, I don’t think I would have been brave enough to pull the vinyl pants on a few years ago.
#17 BUT I WOULD NEVER WEAR THE UGLY SHOES
Screw the blogging and all, I would never, but truly never wear fake leather shoes, crocs, teva sandals and walkmax shoes.
#18 FASHION HELPED ME GET TO KNOW MYSELF
MORE LESSONS AND MORE STYLE
This is it. There are probably more fashion lessons I learned in the last 12 months, but truth to be told I don’t remember any other. Ps. Want to read more deep Wednesday wisdom kind of posts? Then be sure to check 20 something things I learned before my last birthday over here. Those life lessons are legit though. And you should learn them too. By the way, wich fashion lesson listed surprised you the most?
