The Thanksgiving Day is so close we can already smell the turkey, apple pie and cranberry sauce. And it’s time for you to start thinking about what to wear to the Thanksgiving Dinner Party. Don’t worry I have you covered on this. I came up with 6 fashionable and most of all comfortable outfits you should wear for this Thanksgiving Day. And yes, even if you are the hostess who has to cook while the rest of the family sits at the table and eats all the delicious food there’s an outfit for you too.

As I wrote in my last year’s Thanksgiving Guide (here), we don’t actually celebrate the Thanksgiving Day in my family. But we do have a feast related holiday in November, with poultry, pie, and wine, which requires a proper outfit. So believe me, I do know exactly what to wear to a dinner party like Thanksgiving’s when feeling comfortable turns out to be slightly more important than looking fashionable and beautiful at the end of the day. You know what I mean. All that food.
Down below you will find the 6 Thanksgiving Outfits you should wear this year. But first, things that will bring some fashion on to your table, too. And few words about what you shouldn’t wear on the Thanksgiving Day.
WHAT NOT TO WEAR TO THE THANKSGIVING’S DINNER PARTY
In short, if you want to find a little space for that bite of warm, delicious and sweet apple or pumpkin pie at the end, you shouldn’t really wear a tight dress. You certainly don’t want stitches to crack, do you? Besides a tight dress is not appropriate Thanksgiving dress in the first place.
Furthermore, you shouldn’t dress tight jeans, or jeans at all, given this is a slightly more formal dinner than usual. Yet, not so formal as the Christmas Dinner, so yes, you can wear the track pants. Wait! I mean the wide leg pants with a side stripe, slacks and not the sweats, the real track pants, of course.
Also, the fashionable pinched in the waist silhouette won’t do you any favour at this dinner party. So you can cross this outfit off the Fashion Trend chart this time too. By the way, have you seen my Silhouette Fall Winter 2018/19 Fashion Report already? If not, be sure to check it out to find some fashion inspiration for Black Friday shopping. DRESSING FOR THE THE THANKSGIVING DAY
So what to wear for the Thanksgiving’s Dinner Party then? Well, it depends on what role do you play at the Thanksgiving Dinner Party. Are you the hostess who not only has to cook all the food but also entertain the guests? Or are you the hostess who secretly got all the food delivered and now trying to impress your guests saying you made everything from scratch in your kitchen? No? Then you must be that perfect hostess who has everything under her control and can spend the entire evening sitting at the table entertaining her guests, while the servants and the chef at the kitchen do all the cooking and serving?
Neither? Then you must be that lost girl who came home for the Thanksgiving’s Day, and the only thing you have to do is to finish your plate and enjoy the time with your family and friends? Well if you are none of these, you are either the friend guest or the plain sister of that lost daughter who usually takes all the spotlight.
Whoever you are and whatever your role is, we will make you shine and look the most stylish and entertaining person at the 2017 Thanksgiving Dinner Party.
WHAT TO WEAR TO THE THANKSGIVING’S DINNER PARTY
As said, you should dress regarding your role at this dinner. You can’t expect to feel as comfortable in the same outfit if you can sit with your family and friends at the table the entire evening or if you have to check the turkey in the kitchen while the rest of the guest are eating their starter and chatting.
Whatsoever, the basics are the same. Like last year, the best outfit to wear on the Thanksgiving Day is a comfortable sweater, yes the ugly sweater this time (ski sweater, not the Christmas sweater) and skirt, a sweater dress, or a Victorian blouse with wide leg track pants. And statement jewellery of course.
As it goes for the materials, swap the fashionable leather for another fashionable fabric. Yes, velvet. You can even wear a velvet suit. Although truth to be told, the velvet suit might be too much for the Thanksgiving’s Dinner. On the other hand, you can wear a velvet suit to the Thanksgiving Party that has more punch than turkey. You know what I mean.
Down below you will find the 6 Thanksgiving Outfits you should wear this year.
WHAT TO WEAR IF YOU ARE THE ONE WHO COOKS THE THANKSGIVINGS DINNER
Undoubtedly, you have the hardest work to do this Thanksgiving Day. Not only you have to make sure you don’t overcook the turkey, but you also have to look splendid regardless the smells and heat from the kitchen. Not mentioning, you will be short on time. My mother always complains she has no time to get dressed and do hair and makeup once she starts cooking. So the safest bet is to dress up before you even start cooking.
I know, this sounds unpractical. But luckily I found just the perfect outfit for you. Obviously, you can’t wear the sweater as you will feel hot in it. Also, wool and cashmere have no place in the kitchen. You know the food safety standards. Neither you can really wear a beautiful long sleeved Victorian blouse with the Chantilly lace as you might ruin it. Don’t worry; I’m not suggesting you should wear some old shirt and resign with the sloppy look.
What you should wear is a nice embellished t-shirt, preferably made of cotton or short sleeved blouse and tailored straight leg wool pants or pleated midi skirt. Yes, the skirt, please. If you are wearing a t-shirt, the skirt is the matching bottom that will make you look like a perfect and fashionable hostess. Besides, midi skirts are in fashion, remember? On the other hand, the wool pants will make you move easily and won’t make you feel tight in your waist. As it goes for the shoes, go for the fashionable kitten heels. Or embellished mules. And don’t forget about the jewelry. No rings though.
Oh and don’t forget to do your hair. I suggest you pin your hair or wear a ponytail. Another thing, keep your hairspray, hair perfume and eau the parfum close. All those smells of the kitchen can ruin your look.
SERIOUSLY, I COOKED ALL THESE BY MYSELF
If you got all the food from the restaurant and now trying to make everyone believe you made it by yourself, then you need to dress so. Surely, you don’t have to follow the same style tips as if you were actually cooking all the food. Yet you do need to give that impression. So same as with the hostess who cooks while entertaining her guests, you should wear short sleeves. You will still be swiping around the kitchen. But you can wear soft and cozy knits, more jewelry. And higher heels as you won’t be on your feet all day long. In short, you get to be Mrs. Bree Van de Kamp.
THANKSGIVING’S OUTFIT OF THE LADY HOSTESS
Lucky you if you can sit with your guest the entire night and play the role of the perfect hostess while someone takes care of the food and drinks. Moreover, you don’t have to worry much about your outfit either. As long as it’s fashionable and slightly more elegant than on a casual Thursday, you are doing great. Not to say anything more, you can wear anything that allows you to breathe and move after the last bite you take. However, the best choice for a lady hostess on this Thanksgiving Day will be either an oversized silhouette (read sweater or beautiful top and a pleated midi skirt), dress, or straight leg wool pants.
DRESS LIKE THE CHIC LOST DAUGHTER
How to dress for the Thanksgiving Dinner Party if you are not the hostess but that chic daughter who just came back home for holidays? Simple, sweater and track pants – read wide leg pants with the sideline. Or even better cargo pants (ps. more about this look coming up soon, meanwhile check how to wear cargo pants on the go over here – it’s better if you try this look before to make sure you feel fully comfortable on the Thanksgiving’s Day Dinner party when you will be in the spotlight).
So it’s either cargo pants or track pants for you. You are a cosmopolitan girl after all. As it goes for the shoes, swap your combat boots (or cowboy boots) for chic sandals (I suggest my favorite Stuart Weitzman in metallic – like the one I wore here) or, if your legs tend to get swollen after so much food, white mules with high heels. Sorry, but heels are a must with the track pants and cargo pants.
By the way, check here for what to wear when flying back home for the Thanksgiving Day. You will find 6 chic outfits that will make you look like a fashion blogger on here way to some dreamy destination.
LAST YEAR THE SHY SISTER THIS YEAR THAT STYLISH, FUN GIRL
Finally, how to dress if you are the black sheep of the family? The so known, most plain girl at the table who hardly gets a chance to be noticed. Obviously not like last year! This year, it’s your year to be in the spotlight at the Thanksgiving Dinner. Believe me, wearing this outfit, not even food will get as much attention as you.
HOW TO DRESS IF YOU WANT TO LOOK CHIC ON THE THANKSGIVING DAY
So what should you dress then? No, not like your cosmopolitan sister. Forget the track pants. You girl will have to show some legs. Luckily, the mini skirts are as fashionable as the midi skirts this year. And they go so well with the sweater. Remember how I wore my mini tweed asymmetric skirt with oversized white turtleneck sweater over here? Well, you should borrow my look.
As it goes for the shoes, you can wear either the white cowboy boots or the black sock boots you bought last year (read those sock boots you actually just bought recently on Black Friday sale – by the way, have you seen my list of Black Friday 2018 best fashion & beauty deals already?). Another great option will be a sweater dress with the over the knee boots. Like the one, you saw me wearing on my Instagram recently. Or any other option from my list of OTK boots outfits (check here).
Not a fan of the skirts? Sorry dear, but if you want to change something in your life and stop being that boring, plain member of your family, this is one small way to do it. Channel yourself and put on that mini skirt or mini sweater dress. Besides, if you wear it with the over the knee boots, you will feel like you are in pants anyway. But others will see you in a completely new way.
HOW TO DRESS IF YOU ARE A GUEST AT YOUR FRIENDS THANKSGIVING DINNER PARTY
In short, anything that is fashionable and isn’t too tight. I would go for a sweater dress or velvet sweater and pleated skirt or wide leg pants.
