Winter Shoes to Wear at Work This Winter

Looking for the shoes you could wear in the snow and at your work? Then you must see my selection of winter shoes that are great for walking to your office down the icy or snowy road, as well as running around the office or sitting at the computer all day. Moreover, the shoes I chose for you are both, fashionable and business appropriate. Ideal for a young entrepreneur and savvy business woman.

I must admit walking around in snowy boots and then changing my shoes when I come to my final destination is not in my nature. Even though I have seen women doing that every day while I lived in Canada every day, I couldn’t adopt this practice. I would rather risk ruining my shoes on the salty road than putting on the snow boots.

Let’s be honest; changing your shoes several times a day is not practical at all. After all, taking on and off snow boots is not that easy as swapping your pumps for ballerina flats. Not mentioning, taking off your wet and salty shoes and putting them into a bag it’s dirty and takes a lot of time. Plus, meeting other business people outside your office, or simply walking into the store or entering into the bar after the work wearing the snow boots doesn’t fit the image of any business woman.

So, rather than enormous snowy boots, you know what I mean, you should wear winter shoes that not only tackle the snow blanket on your way to work but look fabulous as well. As a matter of fact, let me tell you a little secret. You overpay that waterproof tag of the winter shoes. Meaning the shoes that you are not supposed to wear outside the city road at the first place.

I have been walking on the snowy and icy roads in my suede boots (that you can find in the gallery below) and guess what? My feet didn’t get wet. Neither have I ruined my shoes.

I learned from my friends that picking up the right winter shoes that would let you make that few steps in the snow on your way to the work and be business appropriate at the same time is not that easy as buying pumps in the spring.

There are many things you need to take into consideration when purchasing your winter office shoes that you could wear all day long. Before anything else, they need to follow the business code of your company. Then, they need to keep your feet warm outside the office and prevent your feet from sweating when you are sitting in the office. Moreover, they need to be not only waterproof but floor-heatproof, too. Yes, floor heating can ruin your shoes as much as the salt and snow on the road. Finally, your winter office shoes should be fashionable and trendy.

Regardless, all the things you need to look at when buying your winter shoes, you are still left with a large number of shoes you can choose from. Even so, you need to make sure you limit yourself to the winter shoes that fit the professional world. And are comfortable enough for you to stand or sit all day wearing them.

Luckily, there are many different styles of winter shoes you can wear at your work and look business appropriate. Well, actually there are only 3 types of winter shoes that fit all the criteria.

Starting with my favourite type of winter shoes, the ankle boots. Ankle booties are the best choice as they are easy to style with all the professional clothes. They go well with trousers, skirts and dresses as well. Professional, business ankle boots should look rather simple. Best ankle boots for work are the cock boots. Not only they look perfectly under the pants (no visible edges we all hate), they are fashionable too. Yes, sock boots are still in fashion. Ps. Check how I wear my black  sock booties for work over here.

In short, your day-to-go ankle boots should come in black. Especially if you go for lace-up booties. Yet, I advise you to get at least one pair of brown (remember, brown is the new black this season – check the colour report for AW 18/19 to find out more) or fashionable white booties, too. You can thank me at the beginning of the spring.

How High Should Be Your Winter Heels

About the heels height of your ankle boots. Even though there is a rule that says you shouldn’t wear platform pumps in the office, you can go away with the low platform booties in the winter. The emphasis is on the low, of course. About one centimetre at highest. The extra centimetre will make you look more self-confident at work and protect you from the water on the road.

You must have heard that song saying: “My boots are made for walking, that is what they do …” Have this jingle in mind next time you are putting on your boots to wear them at the office. Even though boots are the number one winter shoes, they shouldn’t be your number one working shoes this winter. Unless they fit some of the criteria, I will explain later.

First I need to remind you of few things: cowgirls, the Pretty Woman and Julia Roberts in her OTK Boots, and your swollen legs after hours of sitting in the bellow the knee boots.

No matter how much we love the boots, especially the OTK boots, they hardly fit the business dress code. Many etiquette experts, especially those who lack style inspiration, would even argue that you shouldn’t step your foot in boots to the office.

In reality, you can wear 2 different boots styles to the office, the over the knee boots and the knee boots. True, as long as you remember this:

  • It’s hard to sit in the boots all day, especially in the under the knee boots. Which are either way not business suitable, unless hidden under the trousers, anyway. Therefore you should wear the knee or even better the over the knee boots.
  • No matter the type of the boots they should be made of soft leather (no artificial leather, no pig leather, no reptile’s skin).
  • The colour of the boots should be the same as of the trousers or skirt.
  • You must wear the over the knee boots (always in suede) when you wear a skirt. To put it short, wearing the under the knee boots with your skirt is a big no no.
  • Best office appropriate boots are suede over the knee boots that you wear with your skirt or under your trousers.
  • Unlike the booties, platform boots are not suitable for the work.

As said you could wear the over the knee boots to the office, as long as you don’t look like a Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Meaning your OTK boots should be made of suede and have no platform.

In fact, the over the knee boots are the best choice when it comes to choosing the boots to wear at work. They look great with any skirt, the pencil and midi. They enable you to even wear a slightly shorter skirt to the office. And overcome the two fingers above the knee rule.

Ps. Don’t forget to read this blog post about my favourite OTK boots and see how I wear them here.

Personally, I wouldn’t wear them unless made of black suede and with the slim fit trousers or with the dark jeans. Remember, you must not wear jeans at your office if that is against your company dress code. Still, in case you split the coffee on your last pair of clean business trousers, you can put on dark jeans and suede knee boots. Note, OTK boots are better even in this case. Regardless the boots you decide to where they should be of the same colour as the jeans. There you can go to work like that without anyone to point at you the moment you step into the office.
Not to forget to mention, the brown riding boots. No, you shouldn’t wear them to work.

  1. your winter shoes need to follow the business code of your company,
  2. they need to keep your feet warm outside the office,
  3. winter shoes have to prevent your feet from sweating when you are sitting in the office,
  4. they need to be waterproof,
  5. they need to resist the floor heating,
  6. your winter office shoes need to be fashionable and trendy,
  7. you need to like them!

A little tip: the most comfortable winter shoes are made of goat or calf leather. However, shoes made of pig leather are more waterproof than any other leather shoes.

Only one thing you need to remember. You should never wear the Classic UGG boots to the office. No matter the colour, no matter if they are short, mini or tall. I repeat you shouldn’t wear uggs at your work.

I almost forgot to comment the wedge winter shoes. I will be short at this point again. All you need to know is that they are not business appropriate.

Yes and no. I hate writing an answer like this, but you should note that fashionistas favourite ankle boots for autumn winter2018/19, the cowboy boots, are not always business appropriate. The emphasis is on always this time.

Don’t worry I will show you how to wear cowboy boots for work this season soon. So make sure you get a right pair of somehow office appropriate cowboy boots first.

No. Slouchy boots are not work appropriate. Unless you are a fashion blogger or fashion editor, of course.

Yes, you can wear leopard boots for work. Only let it be ankle boots. And make sure you style them right. Ps. Remember the styling tips I wrote about over here? They are true for animal shoes too.
