French women know stripes should be neutral in our closet. A classic pattern that suits everyone. Either a horizontal or vertical. Stripes are everywhere and on everyone this season. Especially in Paris. And yes, on me too. In fact, I won the game of stripes twice in a row.

POWER STRIPES

I’m sure you have this picture of people dressed in a striped pullover when thinking of French people. And you are right. Stripes are so French. At least this season. This month in particular, when fashionistas are in town.

Honestly, I have never worn horizontal stripes before. You could have seen me wearing vertical stripes in my previous post on elevated shirting and on my Instagram. But when it comes to the horizontal stripes, I can only say: Fashion God forbade the horizontal stripes, that easily overwhelm us. And ruin our figure. Making us look fat or at least disproportional.

However, while in Paris, I spotted this beautiful striped pullover, that made me change my mind over the horizontal stripes. So here I am standing in the rain, on the slippery black and white cubes, holding an umbrella in one hand and iPhone in the other, trying to look good and not to freeze while taking this photos.

Despite the stripes and brown boots, I can’t actually say I’m dressed like a French this time. As I certainly gave a twist to this French natural pattern. I decided to go black and white instead of French blue and white this time. And decided to wear the classic French striped pullover with a fringed tweed mini skirt, an ivory double breasted coat and brown over the knee boots. And the fishnet tights, which are as you already know a fashion must, to wear now. Almost forgot to mention, I’m wearing a sheer black blouse underneath the striped pullover.

Obviously, I couldn’t be without an umbrella this time. So I made sure it doesn’t overrule my entire outfit. On the other hand, I let the bag and the gloves take some of the spotlights. How not, too. As they both come in pink, which happens to be the colour to wear now. Surely, I would prefer to wear pastel pink bag and gloves, but somehow they haven’t found the place in my closet yet.

HOW TO WEAR STRIPES NOW

As I said before, I used to keep a distance from the horizontal lines before. For sure, they are not easy to style. There are few tricks how to rule in the horizontal stripes, though. I decided to go for a short and extremely wide horizontal striped pullover and wear it with a faux wrapped mini skirt this time. I wonder how this pullover will work with a midi skirt. But we will have to wait till next time. I will probably wear it to my first spring picnic next Friday.

Anyway, back to the style tricks. So my fashion advice number one, when it comes to styling the horizontal stripes, is to wear them on a short pullover. Make sure your top or pullover is not wide if you want to look slim. Or copy my style, and wear a wide horizontally striped pullover with a wrapped mini. Yes, it has to be a mini, and it has to be wrapped. Or at least it has to look as it is wrapped, if not both. The thing is, that it has to point down and make you look taller. Well, to be honest, it has to make you look normal. As the horizontal stripes will take away some of your height and add you some pounds. Even better, if your wrapped mini has some stripes, too.
